Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How it Works!

Do I have to pull a building permit?

Yes. It’s required by every municipality in Utah. Regardless of it being the law, it’s also a the SMART thing to do.Why? Suppose you choose not to get a permit because “John the handy-man” you just hired claims they’re not necessary. If John wires the basement improperly how will you know? If there is a fire because of this poor wiring, done without a permit, insurance usually denies the claim. Is it worth it to save a few dollars?

How Much Do Permits Cost?

It varies from city to city but usually they’re usually $3-500.

Is Insurance Important?

It’s the law, so yes, it’s important. The reason it’s a law is simple. Without insurance from a contractor, you the homeowner, are 100% responsible for damage or injury during construction. That’s a big risk to save a few bucks with an unlicensed contractor.

.

Should I use a licensed contractor? Don’t they cost more?

Again, it’s illegal for someone to perform work that requires a building permit unless they have a contractor’s license. This law is in place to protect you. Licensed contractors are required to maintain insurance, pay their bills and have all of their work inspected for safety and quality. Using licensed professionals is a smart investment.
